Conservation and Sustainable Management of Selected Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Dang

Objective

In situ conservation of germplasm of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs), development of cultivation technique and transfer of appropriate technology to the local people.

Activities

-

Conduct Ethnobotanical survey

- Collect germplasm of important medicinal plants and conserve them in herbal garden.
-

Domestication of wild MAPs by developing appropriate Agrotechnique.

-

Provide training to Community Forest Users Groups (CFUGs).

Achievements

-

Survey was carried out in two municipalities & 32 VDCs of Dang

-

Survey has revealed 275 species of plants are used by local healers of different ethnic groups (Tharu, Magar, Ahir, and Khas)

-

Twenty five different species of MAPs are at the verge of extinction

-

Germplasms of 75 species of MAPs have been collected and maintained in herbal garden in Beljhundi, Dang.

-

200 local traditional healers have been identified.

-

Herbarium of 275 species of medicinal plant have been prepared which is being used by Ayurved Campus, MSU Dang for teaching and demonstration purposes

-

Cultivation technology has been developed for Rauvolfia serpentina, Piper longum and withania somnifera.

-

Cultivation trials are under going on Chlorophytum tuberosum, Asparagus racemosus, Catharanthus roseus and Ocimum sanctum.

Training on "Identification of MAP'S and preparation of herbarium specimens” , "Sustainable management of medicinal plants in the community forest" and "Nursery management & cultivation practices" were organized. Total of 33 trainees from Community Forest User Groups (CFUG's), NGO's of Dang & field staff of MSU were trained at various stages. Women trainees comprised one third of the total.
