NAST
observed its silver jubilee on December 6, 2007.
Marking the day Chancellor of NAST and Prime Minister
Girija Prasad Koirala laid the foundation stone
for the construction of a National Research Laboratory
and a Science Learning Centre.
The Science Learning Centre is
being established within the premises of Nepal Academy
of Science and Technology (NAST) with technical
and financial support from the Government of India.
Addressing the gathering, Prime
Minister Koirala stressed on the need to develop
science and technology for the development of the
country and emphasized the need to mainstream the
development of science and technology. He further
asked the government stakeholders to provide all
assistance to complete the new infrastructure within
two years.
Pro-Chancellor and Minister of
Environment, Science and Technology Mahant Thakur
said science and technology should be used for poverty
alleviation, development of alternate energy and
biotechnology.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Hom Nath
Bhattarai said that the establishment of the new
well equipped laboratory will provide national standard
facilities to conduct advance research in various
field of science for Nepalese scientists.
On the occasion PM Koirala gave
away the Science and Technology Academy
Award to Prof. Dr. Dharma Sharna Manandhar,
Science and Technology Promotion Award to
LI-BIRD Nepal, Mohan Dhwoj Basnet Technology
Award to Dr. Suresh Kumar Dhungel, Science
and Technology Youth Award to Dr. Prem
Prasad Poudyal, Dr. Diwakar Sharma, Dr. Niranjan
Parajuli, Dr. Balkrishna Joshi and Dr. Bijaya Jaisi.
Similarly, The Academy of Sciences for the
Developing World (TWAS) Awards to Dr. Chinta
Mani Pokhrel, Dr. Rosemary Shrestha, Dr. Narayan
Adhikary and Dr. Surya Kant Kalauni.
Likewise, the five senior S &
T personalities were also feilicitated in recognition
of their contribution in various field of science
and technology on the occasion. The felicitated
personalities were Dr. Suresh Raj Chalise ( Meteorology),
Dr. Amrit Bahadur Karki (Microbiology), Dr. Hari
Badan Pradhan (Nursing), Mr. Achyut Prasad Pradhan
(Engineering), Dr. Kamalesh Lata Rajbhandary ( Agriculture).
On the occasion Dirgha Sewa Padak
was gave away to ten NAST staff in recognition of
their 24 years service period. The awardee were
Dr. Chiranjivi Regmi, Mr. Kamal Mani Acharya, Mr.
Shekhar Shah, Mr. Lalit Charan Shrestha, Mr. Rajendra
Shrestha, Mr. Ram Lal Tamrakar, Mr. Laxman Manandhar,
Mr. Raghu Shrestha, Mr. Chandra Prasad Pandey and
Mr. Kul Bahadur Basnet.
Similarly, 5 NAST staff were also
given cash prize and letter of appreciation for
their good performance in the year. The awardee
were Dr. Ramesh Man Singh, Dr. Kanti Shrestha, Mr.
Jeet Bahadur Tamang, Mr. Badri Nath Bhattarai and
Mr. Gopal Chitrakar.
