Abstract

Noise level monitoring was camed out at 24 sites from November 2001 to February 2002 in Kathmandu valley Of these sites, 16 were selected in high vehicle pressure area (seven sites in ring road and nine sites inside ring road). Other remaining eight sites were selected from least vehicle pressure area. The temporal distribution of noise level in ring road and inside ring road were not significantly diferent. The spatial distribution of noise levels show slight variation at high vehicle pressure sites. The highest noise level was recorded at Putalisadak Chowk. The study clearly indicates that the present noise level in Kathmandu city is comparatively higher than the major cities in India. Some kind of mental health problems were also reported from high noisy areas of Kathmandu valley.
