Water Quality Status of the Saptakosi River and its Tributaries in Nepal: A Biological Approach
AbstractThis paper describes the macrozoobenthic composition and water quality due to organic pollution of the thirty-eight river sites from Saptakosi river system with altitude that varied from 1300-3440m above sea level. Sixty-eight families of macroinver-tebrates were identified. Eight different biotic indices and score methods were applied in assessing the water quality of the sites investigated. Wide variations in values have been observed. None of the foreign indices or score methods could be satisfactorily applied in water quality assessment of the Nepalese streams. Nepalese Biotic Score (NEPBIOS) with modification when used in combination with Biological Rapid Field Assessment method would be effective.
